Some Thoughts on Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy for Adolescents and a Case Presentation with Illustrations of Relevant Techniques
Woo Lee-Hyok

Abstract
The author brings some developmental perspectives to the technique of psychoanalytic psychotherapy for adolescents. A clinical case is presented with reflections of the author and his supervisor and there are discussions on the timing of making interpretations as well as the depth of each interpretations. The patient presented in this paper is a 15 year old boy with typical adolescent ¡¯dilemmas¡¯ which he becomes able to explore with support of his therapist. The therapy itself does not provide a complete solution to his dilemmas but enables him to think through his past and present to make him think of his future eventually. His relationship with his mother gets better as his projection, fears and anxieties are explored. His attack on his sexuality is so relentless that he claims himself as ¡¯gay¡¯ which indicates clearly he is struggling with his sexual identity. In combination with projective identification and splitting, his ¡¯gay¡¯ position provides a temporary, albeit a little bit perverse, solution to his anxiety which originates from his oediphal conflicts.
